Visit to the Worshipful Company of Butchers in London

3/11/2015

During the summer an invitation was received by the Clerk for up to 10 of the members of the York Gild, who were not Liverymen, to visit the Worshipful Company of Butchers in London on 10th September 2015 on the occasion of their meeting of Common Hall.  This meeting is usually restricted to Liverymen only so the members of York were very privileged to receive such an invitation.

Picture
On the 4th June 2015 the Master Stephen Wilkinson attended the official launch of the latest Jorvik Exhibition: Power and Glory – York in the Time of Henry VIII, in Barley Hall (www.barleyhall.co.uk ). The exhibition includes archaeology, accounts of life in the city, and the effects that this Tudor Monarch had on life in York. It also focuses on Henry VIII’s only visit to York in 1541 with his 5th wife Catherine Howard, after the events of a northern rebellion - the Pilgrimage of Grace. The Master is planning to arrange a special evening viewing for Butchers Guild members and their guests in the coming weeks.

Visit to The Worshipful Company of Butchers, London

5/2/2015

The first Thursday in February of this year saw the annual visit down to The Worshipful Company of Butchers, London for the Master, David Clapham who was also accompanied by the Clerk.

Unlike previous occasions this visit was to the Ironmongers Hall as Butchers Hall in London is now closed and will be for the following four years for redevelopment of the area around it and refurbishment of the Hall itself.

The Master and the Clerk were both invited to attend the meeting of the Court of Assistants of the Worshipful Company prior to attending the Livery Luncheon.

At the luncheon the Master took his place on the top table along with the other guests of the Company, Mr Chris Cummings Chief Executive, The City UK, Mr James Crockatt, Prime Warden , The Worshipful Company of Dyers, and  Mr Robin Furber, Master of  The Worshipful Company of Pewterers.

This visit was the penultimate one of David Clapham’s year as Master of the Company of Butchers of the City of York. He commented:

‘it gave me great pleasure and delight as Master of the York Butchers Gild to have been the Guest of the Worshipful Company on the occasion of their Court of Assistants Meeting and Livery Luncheon, along with our Clerk Jean Sawdon.

We were made most welcome by the Master and his Court members along with all present at the Livery Luncheon. I feel that closer links with our fellow company in London have been further advanced during my period in office and sincerely hope that future liaison will potentially lead to more frequent activity of a combined nature between the two Companies.’

Butchers, Bakers and Candlestick Makers

10/11/2014

On Wednesday 15th October, The York Archaeological Trust (www.thejorvikgroup.com) launched its latest book, the 8th in the Oral History Series, entitled Butchers Bakers and candlestick Makers: The story of the Shambles and Colliergate, by Van Wilson (Price: £9.99).

Local Author and oral Historian Van Wilson has presented an engaging account of one of York’s most historic areas, The Shambles and adjacent Colliergate. The Shambles is famous for its butchers’ shops, which feature in the book, alongside other establishments including rope makers and wood carvers, ironmongers and chemists, eating houses and pubs, bookshops and a fortune teller. With considerable historical research and photographs never before published, the book will appeal to anybody interested in York’s history and social development.

The event was organised by Sarah Maltby who is Director of Attractions for the Trust, and was hosted in Barley Hall (www.barleyhall.co.uk). It began with a splendid afternoon tea. Seven members of the Butchers Gild were in attendance. The proceedings were introduced by the Deputy Chairman of the Trust, Graham Wilford, who thanked all those involved especially the Author, and Christine Kyriacou the Editor and Archivist who had managed the project.

The Lord Mayor Councillor Ian Gillies, a Member of the Butchers Gild, thanked the Trust and all those involved with the book and wished it great success. He was followed by David Clapham who had been given the honour of writing the forward to this book. He highlighted that much change had occurred in the meat industry over many years. He was very pleased that the importance to York of the early butchers and other trades in the Shambles area had been so well documented in this oral history.

The book contains chapters on The Shambles and Colliergate; Childhood in the Shambles and Colliergate; Provision Merchants and Eating Houses; Churches; Butchers; Leisure and Entertainment; Businesses in the Shambles and Colliergate; Bookshops; Craftsmen; and The Chemist and Ironmonger. The Author interviewed over 45 people, including a few members of the Gild. They have all shared their memories, photographs and stories about the people who lived here and the early activities of this area of York. These oral recollections are presented in the book together with other historical research and archives.

Finally the author, Van Wilson, signed copies of the book for those in attendance. A copy of the book will be placed in the Gild library.

A Message from the Master

24/7/2014

As Master of the Gild during the quadrennial year of the Waggon Plays I had a immense sense of pride and honour in our production this year. Our new Director Tom Strasz produced what I considered to be one of the most dramatic I have seen over the past Sixteen years. Under Tom's direction and modern day interpretation the actors from St Chads combined to produce a most memorable event for all those privileged to watch.

I must also thank those members of the Gild who contributed to preparing and maintaining the Waggon and providing the power to move it over the two Sundays and not forgetting a number of individuals who contributed as programme sellers and helpers. You have my most sincere thanks and appreciation.

The Master, David R. Clapham
